What Type of Airgun Do I Need?
There are four main types of airguns available in the UK for purchase with each one offering something slightly different depending on your circumstances. For beginners and entry level, we recommend going for a spring powered airgun as these are the most common type of air rifle available in the UK and at a cheaper price point too. The main advantage spring powered has over other types of airguns is the ability to just pick up and shoot, requiring no gas canisters or pumps.
PCP airguns provide a lot more power and are great at hunting or pest control. These guns do require an attachable air canister, but can often shoot hundreds of pellets before needing a recharge. As they are usually more expensive and can shoot at much higher velocities, they are often used by more experienced shooters when hunting, varmint or competitive shooting.
Gas Ram or Gas Piston air rifles are similar to spring powered airguns but instead use gas filled cylinders instead of a spring piston and don’t have any canisters like their PCP counterparts. These are usually a great option if you’re a beginner and are suited to pest control, small game hunting and practise shooting.
Lastly, C02 airguns are similar to PCP air rifles but instead of using air, use C02 gas. These airguns tend to be cheaper than PCP air rifles but are not as powerful, but can be styled in more ways than PCP guns to give a more authentic shooting experience. We recommend using C02 airguns for plinking or occasional shooting.
Sub 12ft/lbs Airguns
In the UK, any air rifle that is over 12ft/lbs requires a firearms certificate (FAC) whilst anything under does not. Sub 12ft air rifles are usually powerful enough for most shooters looking to hunt small game or keep check of pests at smaller distances. Ammunition will range from .177 to .25. The choice of pellet will depend on the power of the airgun. You can purchase your airgun ammunition from here!
